Here is one reason I can come up with, for some kids. You can add yours if you so chose.
1. I"m in charge of your grade. Here is the thing. I have it set up where tests are 2/3 daily is 1/3. I don't care if you think its "retarded". Its the way it is. No your grade won't get better if you continue to make 100s on easy daily assignments, but we haven't taken another test and you made a 61. Yes, you have to show up for fast Friday after lunch. Your grade is below a 75 and you evidently don't have good study skills, so I will help you with that. Its a serious lack of respect for authority to continue moping, griping, beotching about why you suck at life(I mean my grading policy). I didn't almost fail your test for you. You did that. Own it. Make a better grade next time.

I'm for gradeless classes honestly. Grades are for parents, not the kids. As long as students are learning and growing and experiencing those lightbulb moments daily, isn't that what we should be proud of and hanging our hats on?

I think some of the teachers, admin, ad coaches have a superiority complex that impedes on kids learning in classrooms. I say coaches because I have seen it so many times. We're so concerned with regulations and rigamoral (sp?) that we forget that they are children. Inner city or rural, white or black, good home or welfare baby....

We aren't just teaching subject matter, we are teaching life lessons like responsibility, being on time, organizational skills, interpersonal communication skills, etc etc. Unless you are your own boss, you are gonna have to be able to adapt to how others have set up distribution of resources. Grades, pay, benefits and so on. I say teach all of it.
