During my time as a newscaster I have covered a multitude of topics. The never ending issues in the Middle East. American Politics. Wars. Peace. And, of course, The Olympic Games. Another topic, one that seems to pop up more and more these days, is slowly becoming an epidemic. No, I'm not talking about guns. I'm talking about inappropriate relationships that teachers have with their students. Growing up in New York, this did not seem to ever be an issue. I suppose because the majority of teachers were older and the students did not develop as early as they do these days. Perhaps it was because we had a higher ethical and moral code in those days. Or, maybe it did happen all the time and no one was aware of it.
I seem to notice a majority of these teachers also serve as coaches. They seem to dangle the carrot known as playing time over these young adolescents and slowly chip away at the child's outer shell. Slowly, like a python squeezing the life out of its prey, the child sees no other alternative and is firmly enslaved by the adult. The coach, being overly aggressive and not all that intelligent, begins abusing the child, mentally at first before moving on to the physical aspects. What is it about these coaches that makes their minds work this way? Were they under achieving athletes? Lower than average students? Perhaps they are simply making up for all of the things they could not do in their childhood. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm sure the future coaches partook in alcoholic beverages and parties during their formative years. But, I can't help but wonder if now, looking at their current lives of eeking it out and living paycheck to paycheck, if they don't hold a grudge against these young students. Or, perhaps if we dive deeper into the psychological issues of this, the impact of concussions in our professional athletes, the number of athletes that go broke after their careers are over, and the multitude of other issues we face in youth/adult sports if, possibly, athletics at a young age is creating these problems later in life.
Parents, talk to your students about safety. Not only about guns, but also about their coaches/teachers. If your child participates in athletics you might want to take another look at that part of their life from every angle and be sure they are not being harassed, controlled, or molested by an egotistical, meat head of below average intelligence who is only looking out for themselves. Think about these issues America. God bless.
