1. What are some of the best questions that you can ask in an assistant football coach interview? Regardless of position/coordinator/etc....
2. What are some of the usual/normal questions one might be asked when interviewing for an assistant position or coordinator position?

actually, i'm asking in a serious manner. haven't really interviewed in about 10 years and getting ready to go through some soon.

If the person has experience, I like to ask how they think their previous HC would describe their work habits.
Ask why they are choosing to apply there.
Ask what they can contribute to the coaching/learning environment of the school.
Ask if they think they are a good role model and why.

I don't worry about Xs and Os as much as how guys would fit with the current staff.....

Don't ask those in front of admin, especially if admin have no background. You might ask what types of offense and defenses they have a background in. Positions, etc. You can get those kinds of answers on the walk around. I got a better feeling on interviewees while showing them the facilities and all. Of course I knew who I wanted as my OC, so that was pretty easy. The principal had turned down another great candidate because of education speak and didn't interview great. Dude was a fireplug of a coach, ex HC, and his test scores should have made him a slam dunk. Got the same thing with better offensive set up out of FB78. Thank God for dumb principals.
Another good question would be asking about other skills and duties he has done. A guy that is good at painting the field, or like stud says, good with film or the computer might be something to tip the scales one way or another.

I don't worry about Xs and Os as much as how guys would fit with the current staff..... I agree with you on fit. Xs and Os are overrated. Can he learn our scheme? Can he teach the position? I want to understand how he will go about teaching his players in the meeting room and on the field. I'll make sure he understands our Xs and Os IF he can teach.

That was a crazy experience. Did you realize our old WR coach is now a principal?! I'll never forget the time our HC made me apologize to him for being too mean to him.

Tell me about your current job. What do you like most? What would you change? HAVE YOU BEEN REHIRED?
What would your current principal/AD/Head Coach tell me about you?
Why us? Why here?
How do you believe that football games are won?
What is your philosophy of winning football in general? Offense? Defense?
What are your strengths as a coach? Weaknesses?
Are you computer literate? Microsoft Word, Power Point, Hudl, etc...
Do you have a CDL?
Do you have any experience caring for a game field? Painting?

good stuff here. this may actually be the first time i've ever posted something serious on this board.
lebow/rowdy - you should leave this thread up here. very helpful info.
the one constant that i keep seeing in this thread has to do with not necessarily knowing your x's and o's, but being able to be a team player - what else can you contribute? i.e. - marking the field, using hudl, driving the bus, etc.... that and basically are you yourself coachable/teachable? if you are, then we can make it work. if you're not, then it's not gonna work out here for you.
anyway, this is good stuff.

After you've asked all of the "how is work ethic, philosophy, etc." Defensive guy: Get on the board and draw up Double TE/Double FL Gun on the left hash. Have him show how he would line up to defend it. Offensive guy: Have him explain what he would rather play against on the Goal line. Man or Zone? I could tell you if the guy is a FOOTBALL coach or not pretty quickly.

I really like asking the what are your weaknesses question. Anyone can answer the what are your strengths and you usually get a standard response, but the what are your weaknesses question makes them think and you can get a more thought out and honest response. Also like the what positions have you coached/what would you like to coach question. And usually ask some kind of "what is your style/how do you handle discipline."

Biggest mistake I see in the interview process is the interviewer talking too much. Let the guy talk, and be a good listener... you can learn a lot.
Another thing I learned is when asking the questions on "philosophy" how many people get stumped by that question. Maybe I'm old, but I think everyone should have one. A general thought or idea, vision, of what you think it should be. Overall for the entire program, offensive, defensive, etc...

I've never really thought "philosophy" questions should come up too much in an assistant interview. Head coach, yes. Assistants need to show they can get on board with the philosophy that is in place. I guess I can see using that question as a way to see if the guy "fits" with what you have in place. Is that how you use it, thatguy?
