I think it's huge, but again that may not be the norm. Really important if it is an OC/DC guy to have a philosophy. I just think anyone and everyone should have an idea, a specific idea, of who they are and what they believe in.

I've been going through the interview process recently. It's always good to sit back and make yourself think about the big issues like program culture, etc.

KW... exactly. I think as coaches sometimes we get so caught up in the minute details of the game that we forget the big picture stuff. Yes, having your DB's T-step out of a zone drop or O-line footwork vs a head-up technique vs a shaded technique is important, but knowing how, or if, it fits into the big picture of what you are doing is just as important.

Yes, having your DB's T-step out of a zone drop or O-line footwork vs a head-up technique vs a shaded technique is important, but knowing how, or if, it fits into the big picture of what you are doing is just as important. If you haven't read it, check out Urban Meyer's new book. It really breaks down how they establish the culture of the program. He takes a bunch of stuff most of us already use, but he packages it in a way that just makes sense.

I think finding guys that will "buy in" is the most important thing in hiring a guy. Been places where the coaches were THE problem. If the assistant coaches don't buy in to what you're doing they can sabotage you. I don't exactly know how to ascertain this in an interview but I would love to hear ideas?

Loyalty is numero uno! For assistants and head coaches. It is a two way street. There are enough people out there trying to tear down coaches. We have to have each other's back.

The "fit" in the coaches office is huge, IMO. I've coached at a place where the guys were all good guys, we just didn't have a lot to talk about. Not much in common. It just wasn't enjoyable.

We are blessed, our staff works well together. I not only worry about the fit of a coach with the staff, but how will his entire family fit with the Staff Family........ Wives not getting along is a horrible situation

Wives not getting along is a horrible situation You guys are tight. Have seen that from jump street. You know you are doing something right in building a close staff when you want to make sure a coaches family fits in as well. At one time, I was the only coach on staff to currently be married. Gatherings after games was a sausage fest. Just wasn't as fun as the times you could give each others wives and kids h3ll while trying to stand up. We didn't gather after one game this year. We were tight in the office, but not being close outside the office has its problems too.

We gather after every home game at a different house....... Coaches, wives, kids, etc..... Makes for good times.... We meet after losses as well

yes. Those are needed. How many of you allow admin to come to these gatherings? Have had some parents even show up at a few places and I'm not a fan of that to be honest. Its our time to celebrate or mourn.
