When interviewing in front of the school board what would you expect? Some say be weary of these situations, because most board members are not qualified to ask personnel questions. What are your opinions?

When I interviewed, school board members were present, but did not ask questions.

But if they do, be honest.

Yup. If they ask specific program questions, you might head out. Its always good for you to ask them questions as well. What are their expectations, etc.

I would steer clear. That seems maddddd shaddy.....do you really want parents asking questions and determining YOUR job?

Q: how can you create a bonding and strong relationship with band?
Q: do you plan on moving to the town of ******?
Q: how do you plan on maintaining a good relationship with girl's coaching staffs
Q: what do you plan to do about non-coaching teacher relationships?

Always be honest. I probably undersell myself more than I should, but I never want to answer a question based on what I know they want to hear. If they don't see eye to eye with me an vice versa, it is better to not get the job. I always think it is weird when you interview with a board, but depending on what they ask/role and their answer to my question, would determine my feelings on it.

I can see the HC interviewing with the school board since the head football coach is in most cases the face of the school and community. But if they start ask questions that you know that is not in their "wheel house" that can be a sign for trouble on the horizon. I understand if they ask questions on discipline, academics, or community relations, but if they ask what is your offensive/defensive philosophy, or personnel questions exit immediately.

Interviewed in front of a board for a head coaching job (football). One of the questions they asked was how I would handle substitutions. I was a little confused and answered the best I could. After the interview I asked the AD about the question. He told me that it was the same set of questions they had used to hire the basketball coach. The board forgot to take the question out before they interviewed the football coaches. They realized it after the first coach and decided to be fair so they asked all coaches. This is why I don't like school boards.
