Graduate Assistant? Someone who has recently graduated and is being paid as if they were still a student... i.e. meal plan, room and board, gear maybe a small stipend. Duties depends on the coach I would assume, how much do they trust him, usually doesn't have his own position group will be an assistant to the position coach. Will be a guy who does video duties like setting it up pre game, making sure it is uploaded and tagged post game. Just depends on if we are talking High School GA or a College GA, then is it a small high school or large high school, Division 3 or Division 1. Think the duties change with the level of the position. Could mean filling water buckets, is usually the runner for anything a coach needs on game days, Doesn't always have a headset... Feel a lot goes into this general question...

I think a HS GA is a young guy who is probably in college that is getting either an hourly rate or a stipend to help out the other coaches either as a position coach or as a "manager" so to speak. If it is the latter of the two, it gives the GA time to watch and learn how to coach a certain position. We had one my first two years at Dibble. Coach Keeble helped out tremendously behind the scenes!

Well I have had student assistants who are still students that help with video and managing on sidelines.... Or I have had Graduate Assistants who recently graduated high school and are pursuing a degree in coaching while in college. Just like most college GA's pursuing a Masters Degree while coaching.
In my small school experience my GA was usually given RBs and was with me most of the day, he had duties such as making sure our managers had everything ready pre practice and everything cleaned up post practice. He had a hand in laundry duty, all my coaches do laundry duty as none of us are ABOVE it, He was in charge of setting up the field pre game if we were home this includes Goalpost pads, Pile Ons, chains out, end zone camera set up, make sure score board is on, music is ready, booth materials are ready, I usually gave him a "Travel Checklist" that we would go over before we left to make sure we had everything, made sure games were uploaded and ready for trade the next morning, tagged his part of the film weekly, and any other game plan weekend duties assigned... I would try to get him a $1,000-$1,500 stipend sometimes less one time more and make sure he got all the "Gear" perks of a coach... shoes, jackets, shirts, pants, shorts, etc...
Can elaborate on the big school experience as well if needed.... I know everyone does differently with theirs if they are fortunate to have them.

I, personally, have never heard the term 'GA' associated with a HS graduate volunteering to help out a HS or college program.

If he is a volunteer I don't believe I would associate the term 'GA' next to his name... It would be volunteer assistant... If he is a post graduate while pursuing another education and is getting paid to do those duties I believe that is when the term 'Graduate Assistant' comes into use. I don't usually use this term as I just call them an Assistant but I know thats what some would put their title into referencing your question "What is the definition of a G.A.?" I also think this is a term that changes with each person and can be defined based on one's opinion. |

However, this is just my first year here and it may be different in other places. In Oklahoma, sometimes that isn't a reality and they do whatever they need to try and get them coached up with limited funds and available coaches.
Multiple GAs are in every college program I know of at that level.

I wanted to get my foot in the door. My old position coach was at a different school and he kinda helped open the door for me. Then that following spring I was able to student teach at that same school. I've been on a couple staffs were we've had a college guys come in and coach for us, when I was a head coach we had a GA one year. I do think it is an 'Oklahoma' thing, because of the financial make up of education and athletics up here. Of all the guys that I've seen 'GA' I believe all but 1 went on to complete their degree and become HS coaches. So I think it's a good thing. |
