Ok fellas, I have an interview for a DC job at a larger school next week. I don't have as many years in as some that are being interviewed, but also know some of the others can't coach their way out of a wet paper sack. So, here's my question... Is it a good/bad idea to make a binder (the kind that office max and those places make) of what we do defensively. I have a very detailed powerpoint of everything we do and how it's coached. Good/Bad/ or doesn't matter idea?

if you think it would give you a leg up on the competition, i'd say go for it.

If I were interviewing you I would want to see some of that, but I wouldn't overload them........ Make sure you sell yourself the entire time..... I would want to know how you make the program and staff better, how do you fit in the district, how do you work with others.... The right fit is more important in my mind...
What if they want you to learn their system and their terminology so the kids don't have to change???

ABSOLUTELY!! Never go in empty handed! But, don't make the notebook too long either. It needs to be short and sweet so to speak. If you hand them something that is 25 pages long they either aren't going to read it or they are just going to think you copied it off of the internet. Also, if you are going to make a binder, go all out and make it look good with all their logos on it etc...

But, they have given up a little under 50 points a game defensively the past 4 years (they have an unbelievable offense that wins the game for them), I think the guys who have been running defense have a flawed system... maybe I'm wrong though

If you are confident, offer to get up on the board and draw some things up!

I wouldn't go in there bashing them man and saying what they are doing is wrong when you haven't been there......... I would be saying how you will build off of things they have accomplished and work to make the defense better everyday

That would be an automatic "thanks for your time" interview.... not wanting to do that.

The defensive guy that "fits" everything and then the offensive guys that only draws up RPOs or option when they never do that stuff.........

Do some heavy research. Find out what the HC really likes on defense. What system is he comfortable with? When his teams have had success, what defense did they run? Do research on the returning starters...what defense would best fit the personnel? And fit that to your system. Did they do anything positive on defense last season? If so, how can you build on that? Mainly: why are you the answer to that team's needs on defense? Interviews are mostly about finding out what that employer needs and how you fit that......research the h3ll out of them.

Don't talk so much about scheme... Schemes change with kids. Instead talk about what things are important to you and what will you stress... such as the typical running to the ball, no loafs, simplicity, aggressive, etc... whatever you value.

The most important thing to me is how your relationship is with the kids and if you can teach them...... How simple can you make it so we play fast
